What is the relationship between Global Geoparks and the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals?
Timer:2024-05-28

Global Geoparks have played a significant role in participating in the global governance system and contributing to the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by promoting the tasks of UNESCO on a broader scale, popularizing geological science and general science, and integrating education, culture and information dissemination.

Goal 1: Eliminate poverty in all its forms

Disaster prevention and mitigation are the fundamental guarantees for eradicating poverty and promoting sustainable development. The Global Geopark, through a bottom-up management approach, actively conducts training on disaster awareness and natural recovery knowledge to enhance the ability of local communities to face extreme situations and various disasters.

Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and provide lifelong learning opportunities for all

The Global Geopark actively conducts educational activities for the local community and visitors of all ages. Global Geoparks are outdoor classrooms and incubators for sustainable development, sustainable lifestyles, cultural diversity and promoting peace.

Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Global Geoparks attach great importance to enhancing women's capabilities through educational programs or women's cooperation projects. This kind of cooperation provides women with the opportunity to earn extra income in their hometowns with their own abilities.

Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and promote full productive employment and decent work for all

Promoting the sustainable development of the local economy through sustainable geotourism is one of the main themes of Global geoparks. Developing tourism and promoting local culture and products can create job opportunities for the local community.

Goal 11: Build inclusive, safe, disaster-resilient and sustainable cities and human communities

Protecting, safeguarding and cherishing our cultural and natural heritage is the foundation of the entire concept of Global geoparks. The Global Geopark is committed to enhancing the regional pride and identity of the local people.

Goal 12: Adopt sustainable consumption and production patterns

Global Geoparks cultivate and educate awareness of sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, and educate local communities and visitors to live in harmony with nature.

Goal 13: Take urgent action to address climate change and its impacts

All the Global geoparks preserve the records of past climate change and are educators of current climate change. Through educational activities, raise people's awareness of climate change issues and provide them with relevant knowledge on mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Goal 17: Strengthen implementation measures and revitalize the global partnership for Sustainable Development

The partnerships and cooperation among Global Geoparks are not limited to local stakeholders, but also include sharing knowledge, ideas and best practices through regional and global networks of Global Geoparks. Experienced geoparks will guide new geoparks to explore their potential.
