What is the relationship between Global Geoparks and China's nature reserve system?
Timer:2024-05-28

According to the relevant provisions of the "UNESCO Global Geoparks Operating Guide" that "UNESCO Global Geoparks must respect local and national laws related to the protection of geological heritage" and "Obtaining the status of a UNESCO Global Geopark does not mean restricting any economic activities within the geopark, but must comply with local, local and national laws and regulations", All activities within the Global Geopark must comply with the current laws, regulations and policies of our country, but no additional restrictive provisions will be imposed. According to the "Guiding Opinions on Establishing a Nature Reserve System with National Parks as the Main Body" issued by the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and The General Office of the State Council, a nature reserve is a land or sea area designated or confirmed by governments at all levels in accordance with the law, which implements long-term protection for important natural ecosystems, natural relics, natural landscapes, as well as the natural resources, ecological functions and cultural values they carry. This includes national parks, nature reserves, and various types of nature parks composed of scenic spots, forest parks, geological parks, Marine parks, wetland parks, etc.

At present, the scope of China's Global Geoparks fully or partially overlaps with the existing nature reserves. Among them, the overlapping areas with nature reserves should be managed in accordance with the requirements of nature reserves. Areas that do not overlap with nature reserves do not fall within the management scope of nature reserves. Geological relics and other resources should be protected and managed in accordance with the relevant regulations of UNESCO.
